EU impressed with projects achievement

 The European Union (EU) Ambassador Rune Skinnebach has expressed satisfaction with achievements registered in projects the union is funding through its partners.

Speaking on Friday after a two -day tour of EU-funded projects in Chikwawa implemented by Unicef and the World Food Programme (WFP), Skinnebach said the projects have helped the vulnerable population to cope with various challenges they are facing.

“I have seen how they have accommodated displaced people, how they have integrated the students into the education system, how they have mounted water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, I am impressed,” he said.

Unicef emergency team leader Narine Aslanyan said they are providing the communities with essential knowledge and skills to help them find possible solutions to the challenges.

WFP country representative Paul Turnbull said the school-feeding programme they are implementing has ensured g ood nut r i t ion among learners, increased enrolment and improved student’s performance.

“We distributed porridge to the school-feeding programme even during the disasters. With additional funding from the EU, we have managed to temporarily incorporate some additional schools in affected areas to help the communities recover,” he said.

Chikwawa district commissioner Nardin Kamba hailed the EU and partners for the support to both learners in schools and Cyclone Freddy survivors.

The EU is supporting the school-feeding programme with 21 million euro (K21 billion).

Since 2015, the EU has supported the education sector in Malawi with 243 million euros.
