The participation of one of the country’s experienced vocalists Eunice Kadzuwa-Mhango in this year’s E-Wallet talent show has opened a can of worms, with some patrons arguing that the platform is tilted towards her favour.

Eunice, who is a lead vocalist for Mizu Band, is among the eight contestants who survived the chop in the first eviction show last Saturday.

Eunice is also a former singer for Mibawa Band, formerly a resident band at Mibawa Cafe in Blantyre. Her Mizu Band currently performs at the Blue Elephant in Blantyre.

Her participation in the singing contest has not gone down well with some patrons who argued that she is beyond the level of ‘unearthing’ her talent.

“This is unfair. Eunice passed this stage. She can’t be seen competing with the younger musicians. If anything, she could’ve come as a voice trainer or guest artist,” said a patron, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Another concerned patron said Kadzuwa’s participation in E-Wallet is not only questionable, but also intimidating to aspiring musicians.

She said: “Eunice is already exposed. Do you unearth a star? Her presence is intimidating to young contestants. They were feeling defeated already because they are competing against someone who is already known in entertainment circles.”

However, despite patrons perceptions of Eunice’s unfair advantage in E-Wallet, observations indicated that she is facing stiff competition from the other contestants.

Eunice questioned the exposure that the critics claim she has.

She said: “If I die today, what will people remember me for? I have nothing to show for. Will you say Eunice was performing in nightclubs with Mizu Band? No, I have a right to participate in E-Wallet to try my luck.”

Eunice added that she is not known despite singing in Mizu Band.

On his part, E-Wallet chairperson Felix Njawala defended the Eunice’s participation, saying she had all the qualities to compete.

Said Njawala: “There is no physical evidence such as album that can prevent Eunice from participating in E-Wallet. Eunice is not the only contestant who is an active singer in some bands. We have some who are great singers in the church as well. In fact, E-Wallet is a national event which gives every contestant a rare platform to showcase their talent.” n
