Ex-Big Bullets chairperson Malinda Chinyama and general secretary Higger Mkandawire have stepped in to help the club’s former striker Godfrey Masonda who is in urgent need of medical attention for his heart ailment.

Mkandawire said on Monday they have taken the initiative to help the player raise K2 million that is needed for him to travel to South Africa for treatment.

“We were touched to hear from Godfrey himself and the family that no progress has been made to raise the funds and we are trying to approach organisations and well-wishers so that the player can be flown to South Africa for treatment.

“His condition is deteriorating by the day and it is cause for worry. We are, therefore, making a desperate appeal to well-wishers to assist,” said Mkandawire.

He said the money will go straight to Masonda’s family.

Speaking from his home in Ntchisi yesterday, Masonda said his condition is worsening.

“I am in so much pain and I am kindly appealing to Malawians of goodwill to help me with whatever little they can through Messrs. Chinyama, Mkandawire and Kim Kamau so that I get help in South Africa.

“As at now, I am just taking painkillers and I cannot walk a distance of more than 100 metres because I feel some pneumonic pains,” said Masonda.

About two months ago, his former club Bullets said they would arrange a friendly match as part of a fund-raising drive for Masondo, but up to now it has not taken place.

The club’s GS Harold Fote said the match was affected by former president Joyce Banda’s donation ceremony, but insisted that they have not abandoned the initiative.

At one point, Masonda rose to become the People’s Team’s key forward partnering Gabadinho Mhango and scored vital goals before he joined a Mozambican team.
