FAM deducts K1m from Silver prize

FAM has charged 2014 Standard Bank champions Silver Strikers for disrupting normal proceedings of the finals against Tigers following pitch invasion by their supporters despite being warned prior to the game.

In a letter dated September 8, signed by Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda, FAM argues that pitch invasion not only disrupted the match, but also damaged Civo Stadium’s perimeter and Standard Bank advertising materials.

The committee, as empowered by article 25 of the 2014 Standard Bank Rules and Regulations present forth the following charges against Silver Strikers:

“The Committee charge Silver Strikers of unsporting behavior for disrupting the normal proceedings of the final following pitch invasion by their supporters despite being warned twice,” reads part of the letter addressed to Silver chairperson Macdonald Mafuta Mwale.

Civo Stadium management are demanding K175 000 (about $460) in damages for the broken perimeter, while Rainbow Scope Media are demanding K841 130 ($2 221) from Silver management for the damages done to Standard Bank advertising materials.

But Silver management, who are yet to meet have described the action by FAM as harsh.

“We don’t know what game FAM is playing, but we are disappointed. When we won the TNM Super League they deducted K1.9 million, saying as damages to Balaka Stadium, yet when Big Bullets and Epac vandalized our Stadium this year, we received no payment from FAM. This is puzzling and not fair,” said Silver Treasurer Fred Kalonga in an interview on Tuesday.
