The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has included the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) Tusker Senior Challenge Cup on the Flames’ calendar of events for 2012.

This year’s edition of the annual tournament will take place in Kenya late in November.

FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda disclosed this on Tuesday when asked if the association was planning for this year’s edition to avoid the uncertainty that surrounded last year’s participation.

“I discussed informally with the Cecafa general secretary [Nicholas Musonye] and he stressed the need for us to express our interest to participate in writing. In our calendar of events, which we will distribute to all our affiliates, we have put tentative dates for Cecafa tournament as from November 20,” Nyirenda said.

FAM’s comments follow an announcement which Musonye made on BBC Radio on Monday night, in which he advised teams to prepare thoroughly for the competition.

The three-time winners Malawi finished in the quarter-finals of the 2011 competition which took place in Tanzania.

The Flames are invited to Cecafa as guests since the team now belongs to the Council for Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) whose senior challenge cup is inactive due to lack of sponsorship.
