FAM secures tourney for elite teams

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has secured a cup competition sponsorship specifically for Super League teams.

According to FAM president Walter Nyamilandu, the tournament will replace the Presidential Cup whose K60 million sponsorship package will now be redirected towards grass roots development.

However, the FAM president kept a tight lid on the details of the tournament such as identity of the sponsor, the package and duration, saying those will be unveiled at the launch.

“We are in the process of finalising the deal and we should be unveiling the sponsor and other details within the month.

“It will be a replacement for the Presidential Cup which was not serving the intended purpose which was to identify and nurture talent,” he said.

PremierBet Wizards owner Peter Mponda and Be Forward Wanderers general secretary Mike Butao described it as a welcome development.

Said Butao: “Any extra means that provide teams an opportunity to make extra money is welcome.” n
