Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has said it is now set to enforce a November 16 2013 resolution to license all football competitions and matches under its jurisdiction.

FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said in this regard, no Super League team and indeed any other team under FAM structures shall take part in a competition or match that is not licensed by the association.

“It was noted that individuals, companies, organisations and indeed political parties are organising competitions and matches for the Super League and regional league teams and others under FAM structures at will without the knowledge and approval of FAM as per regulations,” reads part of FAM’s press statement.

In an interview yesterday, Nyirenda said any organiser or sponsor who will choose to ignore the set-up, will not be allowed to use FAM structures such as referees.

He also said this has been done to bring sanity in the organisation and management of football in the country.

According to FAM, the licences will be issued at the following fees: District competitions and matches (including constituency ones)—K5 000; Regional competitions and matches—K10 000; National competitions and matches—K15 000.

The association says it will be entitled to a non-negotiable 10 percent cut from gate proceeds of all competitions and matches organised by an outsider rather than FAM secretariat, whose matches will attract an entry fee.

Businessperson Justice Katika, who sponsors a K1.5 million football tournament in Bangwe Township, welcomed the development, saying it will level the playing field in the organisation of tournaments.

“Perhaps, the challenge will be for FAM or its subordinates to ensure that the conditions are indeed adhered to. Hopefully, FAM will also use its structures in helping to properly organise competitions, especially in the communities and districts,” said Katika who is aspiring for the Blantyre Bangwe parliamentarian seat.

Bullets general secretary Higger Mkandawire commended FAM for the move saying: “Memories are still fresh of what happened in the Fama Bonanza when some teams did not get their dues and by so doing, it will ensure order.”
