Fama excited by Joyah’s nominations

The Film Association of Malawi (Fama) has expressed happiness over Shemu Joyah’s The Last Fishing Boat nominations in the African Movie Academy Awards (Amaa) during last Friday’s nomination gala night.

Joyah’s film received five nominations for the best film in mother/African language, best picture, best achievement in soundtrack, best director for Joyah’s role and best actress in leading role for Flora Suya as Abiti Anefa.

In an interview, Fama’s acting president Ezaius Mkandawire said the association is overwhelmed that one of their own has made it in the international nominations that serve to recognise talent and quality of production.

“We are excited as a country and as a growing film industry. Joyah’s nominations have proved that with the very few resources that everyone is part of, people are able to make big films that are internationally recognised. The nominations will serve as an encouragement to all Malawians and film-makers who still think that Malawi cannot make it to the big screen,” said Mkandawire.

He said Malawi may be the next location for international crews that are making films about Africa because of the stability and sceneries that we enjoy.

Mkandawire said Fama’s role is to basically provide information to the public about such events, but, unfortunately, it is only a few Malawians who can produce films of international standards to qualify for the nominations and as such, the association will intensify on training.
