Fashion Malawi back after two-year hiatus

Malawi will, for the second time, hold a fashion week courtesy of Fashion Malawi Edition (Fame).

The first edition happened in 2013, a year pacesetters of Malawi fashion events Fame went into hibernation.

Two years of supposedly reflecting and pondering on the next move, Fame is currently looking for up and coming designers to be the next big label from Malawi.

“Malawi can look forward to an exciting week filled with great fashion from the Malawi professional designers and international designers, happens from August 22 to 29. Malawi, like Africa as a whole, is filled with creative talent, set to inspire and drive modern African into the future.

“Fame is looking to the future under the theme of ‘Trendsetters’. Fame represents the dynamisms of creative entrepreneurship especially the fashion industry and the emerging African.

“We own our destiny as Africans; new bold Africans across the continent are making waves from all fields: in fashion, commerce, media, among others,” says Samantha Nampuntha, Fame project manager.

Since its inception about five years ago, Fame is a unique showcase and collaborative arts project that produces an annual exhibit profiling the original work of fashion designers, outlets and accessories’ artisans.

“We will this year, celebrate our evolving Africa with designs that are created for the contemporary African. Does African fashion only mean the typical print fabrics and influences such as chitenje, shells, hessian cloth, wooden masks and drums or anything else,” explained Nampuntha.

Fame Malawi Fashion Week will comprise four elements; the emerging designers who shall compete at the Up and Coming Designer competitive fashion show at Don Bosco Youth Technical Institute on August 22.

“The winner shall have the opportunity to showcase with the professional designers on the Fame main showcase where Malawi and international designers will rock the runway on August 28 at Ufulu Gardens. We will also have the Distinguished Gentleman, which is an exclusive evening of menswear with international designers and Fame will also showcase at the Unima [University of Malawi] Social Weekend in Blantyre on August 29,” said Nampuntha.

New designers must send an emailed profile with six pictures of their designs either physical or sketched.

The deadline for applications is August 10, 2015.
