Faulty rescue boat recovered

Another fascinating chapter was written during the Lake Malawi International Yachting Marathon on Wednesdaywhen one rescue boat was rescued after developing a fault in the middle of the race.

The engine-propelled boat, which is among five rescue boats for the 17 contesting yachts in the week-long competition, was some 30km from the coastline when suffered a cut and immediately started deflating. This prompted the rescuers to press the panic button, according to rescue leader Mark Galloway.

“It is rare for a rescue boat to develop such a fault. But just like any accident, such unexpected occurrences are bound to arise in any competition,” said Galloway.

However, the damaged rescue boat was repaired in time to carry on its rescue mission in the 70-km fifth leg from Dwangwa to Likoma Island the next morning.

Meanwhile, skipper Charles Girard and his crew Gary Hubach continued to reign supreme in the spinnaker class while McFord Issa and Matola Mwawa won the fourth leg in the non spinnaker class.
