FDH Bank trains Flames players on investment

Flames official sponsor FDH Bank on Thursday drilled the camping Flames players on how they can effectively invest their income in readiness for life after their football careers.

FDH investment and business development manager Tamanda Kapalamula said they want to see the Malawi national football team players enjoying life financially even after hanging up their soccer boots.

The training was a follow up to the recent initiative that saw FDH Bank opening K100 000 investment accounts for each player as a reward for reaching the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

“After providing the Flames players with the seed capital, we expect them to think wisely about their future by investing in various businesses including FDH’s money market,” he said.

“As you know, football is a short career, one can get seriously injured today and quit football, leading to the closure of an income source. But through this training, the players can learn how to invest wisely and, in turn, have sustainable income source throughout their lives. It pains us to see former players living miserable lives after illustrious football careers.”

Kapalamula said the players should not leave their money idle in their bank accounts, but invest it to make more profits.

“It is not wise to keep millions of kwacha in an account for a long time when that money can grow through investing in various businesses,” he said.

One of the Flames players—South Africa-based striker Richard Mbulu—said the investment training has opened his eyes on financial prudence.

“I will definitely invest my money through FDH because now I understand how investment works. I hope my fellow players will follow suit to avoid putting their families in a mess after their careers come to an end,” he said.

FDH Bank provides the Flames with K60 million annual sponsorship. The bank also sponsors the FDH Bank Football Cup worth K450 million for five years, translating to K90 million per season starting with this year.
