Fire yesterday gutted Kachere Bakery in the populous Ndirande Township in Blantyre destroying bakery utensils and assorted confectioneries.

The fire brigade team from the Blantyre City Council (BCC) was called immediately after the fire had just started around 10:00 am, but angry residents started stoning the fire engine vehicle accusing the fire fighters of being late, a move which prompted them to get back-up from law enforcers.

In an interview, BCC senior fire officer Prescot Sailasi said the fire brigade team went to the place soon after being notified, but because of the angry residents who were stoning them, they could not start putting out the fire as soon as they arrived.

“We arrived here after getting notice, but upon arriving people started stoning our vehicle, saying we have come late.

“We drove to Ndirande Police Station where we got police officers to back us up to disperse the crowd, so we can go ahead to put out the fire,” said Sailasi.

According to workers, the fire seemed to have emanated from an electric fault.

After about an hour and half, the fire brigade team managed to put out fire though a lot of things had already been damaged.

No one was injured in the fire.
