Fire guts Mchesi furniture shops

Fire early Sunday morning burnt Mchesi furniture shops in Lilongwe, damaging sofa sets and beds worth about K10 million (about $33 333).

A witness, Patrick Ngwenyama, whose property was also destroyed, claimed the fire started because of an electric fault. One of the damaged shops belonged to 12 carpenters with hearing impairment. They are members of the Malawi National Association for the Deaf (Manad).  —Mana

7 suspected of robbery

Police in the Southern Region have arrested seven people suspected of being involved in a series of robberies in Blantyre City. Southern Region spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa identified the suspects as Medison Dula (23), Evance Mikoko (26), Feston George (32), Davie Kahowa (44), Jones Erick (29), Richard Gwaza (34) and Mabvuto Mwandale (29).  —Mercy Malikwa, Staff Writer

Woman suspected of possessing Chamba

Police in Bangwe, Blantyre, have arrested Mary Mathesa (45) for allegedly being found in possession of 11 bags of Indian hemp, weighing over 522 kilogrammes.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said officers on patrol on Thursday confiscated the drug following a tip-off. —Mercy Malikwa, Staff Writer
