First Lady Gertrude Mutharika on Thursday commended girls at Chisenga Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Chitipa for turning a classroom block at the school into a hostel instead of operating from home.

Mutharika, who is also patron of Beautify Malawi (Beam) Trust, was speaking after launching the construction of a girls’ hostel at the school in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwenewenya in the district.getrude-mutharika

Officially, Chisenga CDSS has no hostel although it is one of the oldest schools in the district (it started operating in 1970). However, using their initiative, girls at the school turned one of the old and dilapidated buildings into a hostel, to ensure they live on campus.

Said Mutharika: “Let me commend the girls at Chisenga CDSS for turning a classroom into a hostel. This shows you are committed to pursuing education.”

The school has an enrolment of 273, with only 100 girls. This girls’ enrolment in the four classes (forms one to four) is just half of the number the school is supposed to enrol (200), according to education division manager (EDM) North PopaMkandawire.

The First Lady said the hostel at Chisenga will be the first in a series to be built with funds from Beam Trust.

Later, the First Lady cheered the sick at Chitipa District Hospital.
