The number of suspects arrested in relation to the murder of Assistant Superintendent Victor Midiyani has reached five with the capture on Tuesday of police officer Ken Kamwambi.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said Kamwambi, who was arrested at Limbe Tavern on Tuesday, is suspected to have taken part in killing Midiyani in cold blood two weeks ago.arrest

“A police vehicle was passing by Limbe Tavern and upon seeing the vehicle, one bystander fled by climbing a fence.

“Police officers stopped the vehicle and ran after the suspect. He [the suspect] was caught and said he was not alone as his counterparts who included Kamwambi were in the tavern,” said Gondwa in an interview yesterday.

This is not the first time Kamwambi has been arrested as a suspect in criminal activities as he was also picked in connection with the K412 million robbery at Standard Bank Mzuzu Branch in September 2014.

After being released on bail, Kamwambi was rearrested towards the end of December for alleged links to another robbery that took place on December 13 at a businessperson’s house in Blantyre.

Gondwa identified the other four as Alick Juma (34) from Biwi Township in Lilongwe, Yusuf Wachala (35) from Area 23 in Lilongwe, Gilbert Jonathan Zinanga (34) from Naperi in Blantyre and Lewis Julius (40) from Area 23 in Lilongwe.

He said the four appeared before court for preliminary hearing last week.
