Five people die and six others seriously injured in Ntcheu road accident

Five people have died and six others seriously injured after a vehicle they were travelling in overturned near Doviko Trading Centre along Ntcheu-Tsangano road.

Ntcheu Police station spokesperson Gift Matewere confirmed the accident saying it occurred around 7am on Today.

He added that the 7 tonner lorry registration number SA1036 driven by 30 year-old Hanif Megha carried 30 passengers on board to Doviko market.

Explained Matewere: “Breaks of the vehicle developed a fault when the driver was trying to apply them on a slope and the vehicle eventually swerved to the verge where it overturned.”

He identified the deceased as Jacob Moyo 36, Jacob James 35, Namposi Daudi and Manuel Domingo,whose ages are not known, all from Ndagoma village and Semion of Eneya village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A)  Kwataine in Ntcheu.

The six passengers seriously injured during the accident have been admitted to Ntcheu District Hospital while the remaining others have been treated as out-patients.

Meanwhile, police are searching for the driver of the vehicle who is currently on the run.

According to Matewere, when arrested, the driver will answer charges of carrying unauthorised passengers and causing death by reckless driving.
