FLAMES COACHES’ FATE SATURDAY

The fate of Flames coach Young Chimodzi and his deputy Jack Chamangwana will be determined by a FAM executive committee this Saturday following the expiry of their contracts.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu yesterday said despite guiding the Flames to the group stages of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, it is not automatic that the duo will be retained.

“It is not automatic that they will continue. The process has to be formalised with the executive based on performance. We’ll also have to negotiate the contracts with government.

“It is not my decision, there are parties that are involved and they will have to be consulted, but they (coaches) have done a commendable job. It was not easy to qualify under the tough financial circumstances and they deserve a pat on the back,” said Nyamilandu.

He said coming from a background where the previous regime told them that there was no money for the team’s engagements, it was not easy to sail through to the group stages.

On whether it is feasible to engage another coach when the group stages’ qualifiers are slated to start in less than a month, Nyamilandu said: “I am hoping that things will go on smoothly, but as I said, it is not a one man show, people differ in opinions, but in the end we’ll have to agree on the way forward.”

Chimodzi said they will have to wait for FAM exco’s decision. He further said even if they crack the nod to continue, there are factors that will have to be considered before accepting.

“I think, we’ll have to hear from them so that we are able to respond. And we are also supposed to have our own meeting (with Chamangwana) to assess the situation.

“Besides that, it will not just be a matter of accepting for the sake of it.

It has to be a win-win affair,” said the Flames mentor.

However, when he was asked if he would love to see the team through the group stages qualification campaign, he said: “It would be good to continue because there is rebuilding drive in process and continuity is vital because there are new players coming through.”

  1. I wish if they can continue the job. The new coaches will again come with new tactics which can even be negative in the performance. Again don’t put Mzungu coach. Let these Malawians coach the team. In 2010 a Malawian,
Kinna Phiri took Malawi to Angola Afcon. No Mzungu coach took Malawi to Afcon, they are expensive for nothing!

  2. You can’t imagine of changing and chopping coaches at this stage while we have the weak team. Bafana is likely not to qualify because of officials’ poor decision making.
