The Flames have suffered a setback ahead of tomorrow’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Group B showdown against Algeria as three key players have been ruled out while another one is a doubtful starter.

Defenders James Sangala, Lucky Malata and John Lanjesi are all out of this encounter while striker Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango is expected to undergo a late fitness test today to ascertain progress of his injury.

Sangala—who is also the team’s liaison officer—confirmed having been ruled out due to a hamstring injury, vice-captain Malata has torn ligaments on his hip whereas Lanjesi will serve a two yellow cards’ suspension. Reserve defending midfielder Young Chimodzi Jnr is also doubtful with a calf muscle injury.

“I can confirm that I have been ruled out for two weeks likewise Lucky, but Gabadinho could be available for selection as he has resumed training,” said Sangala.

But such is the confidence in Flames camp that coach Young Chimodzi and captain Joseph Kamwendo played down the development.

“There are indeed one or two that will not make it, but we have steady replacements and we have faith in those that will be selected to fill the places. There is no cause for worry,” said Chimodzi.

While Sangala has been relegated to the bench since he bounced back from retirement, Malata and Lanjesi have been in the starting line-up in recent games.

Lanjesi’s absence will be filled by South Africa-based Limbikani Mzava while Sankhani Mkandawire might crack the nod to fill Malata’s place to partner Harry Nyirenda on central defence.

Meanwhile, Kamwendo has urged fans to create an intimidating atmosphere for the visitors and not boo their own players when the chips are down.

“One of the reasons we do well playing at home is because of the support we get from Malawians. They make a big difference and I urge them to rally behind us on Saturday.

“They are the 12th player and we always appreciate their support. All I am appealing to them is that let the Algerians feel that they are in no man’s land,” said Kamwendo.

Meanwhile, the Algerians were slated to jet in at 11.30pm last night aboard a chartered plane and are expected to get the feel of the match venue this afternoon.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda has also said security at tomorrow’s match will be tight and fans will not be allowed to sit in the cordoned off areas and will be searched upon entry.

“Tickets will also not be sold at the stadium on Saturday, but other designated places such as Blantyre Youth Centre. We have engaged about 500 security personnel and anyone without a ticket will not be allowed within the stadium premises.

“There are also people who sell alcoholic sachets under a certain tree, let them be warned that they will be arrested,” warned Nyirenda.
