Floods affected parts of Karonga yesterday affecting 72 houses mainly in Traditional Authority Kilupula’s area. In a telephone interview, Karonga district disaster management officer Walusungu Mwafulirwa said of the 72 houses, eight collapsed while the rest were submerged.
He said the rains that caused the flooding mainly fell in the western hills, the source of a number of rivers, including North Rukuru, that often flood the areas downstream.
The affected areas include Kaporo and Kibwe which are often flooded around this time of the year. Mwafulirwa said an assessment of the floods was still ongoing. The picture shows a man helplessly assessing the damage.—
