One of the country bank’s FMB jointly with Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) will tomorrow (Saturday) conduct a blood drive exercise aiming to fill MBTS blood banks.

The exercise will be conducted at the bank’s head office at Livingstone Towers Car Park in Blantyre.

The banks’ head of marketing and corporate social responsibility Sylvia Mataka said the initiative is aimed at helping MBTS secure blood in its banks which will assist people in need of blood in various hospitals.

“It is noted that there is a shortage of blood supply in hospitals which has contributed to the high mortality rate of infants, and mothers at the time they are giving birth,” she said, adding that this initiative is in line with the Safe Motherhood Initiative which FMB is currently affiliated with.

Mataka said time is now for Malawians and other organisations to take part in such initiatives to save lives. She said another blood donation drive will be held in December before the festive season.

Research done by MBTS revealed that Malawi needs about 80 000 units of blood per year but the organisation only collects about 35 000 units per year.
