Three family members have died while 16 others are battling for their lives at Ntchisi District Hospital after taking food suspected to have been poisoned, police have confirmed.
The deceased have been identified as Yohane Davison (12), Labani Raphael (6) and Evason Raphael (12) from Kaphuka Village, Traditional Authority Nthondo in the district.
Ntchisi Police Station spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha said the three bodies are currently at Ntchisi District Hospital mortuary awaiting a forensic toxicology examination.
He said the family of about 20 members started vomiting after eating cooked beans on the night of November 22 2014.
Said M’bumpha: “Police investigations indicate that earlier that day, two of the family members, Rute Eliasi and her daughter Elinasi Raphael, visited their step son, Edward Chotsani in Chivyala Village in the same area where they were given the beans.”
M’bumpha said the family cooked the beans and ate them for supper.
He said Labani Raphael was the formulating a second to die before the other 17 victims were referred to Ntchisi District Hospital.
M’bumpha said Evason Raphael died yesterday.
He said police are still investigating the matter.
