Foundation to help fistula mothers
The African Medical Research Foundation (Amref)-Health Africa has said it will continue to repair mothers who suffer from fistula as one way of reducing maternal deaths in the country.
Amref programme manager Seminie Nyirenda said this on Monday at Monkey Bay Community Hospital in Mangochi during the closing of a fistula camp that saw over 32 women getting repaired.
“We are striving for lasting health change in African communities. No woman should die when giving birth and no child should be left an orphan due to lack of health care for women,” she said.
Nyirenda said the foundation will ensure that community awareness is raised within the communities and that patients are coming forth to be repaired.
“Furthermore, we will continue building capacity for clinicians and nurses on fistula to become experts who can do perfect surgeries,” she said.
District health Officer (DHO) for Mangochi, Jeffrey Jooma, hailed Amref for the support it is rendering to fistula patients in the district.
During the camp, women received buckets, sanitary materials, soaps, clothes, food and other essential materials aimed at helping them to live comfortably.
