The fine follows an inspection exercise the department conducted in Mzuzu last month where government officials found that the four companies were still distributing and selling banned thin plastic paper.

This was disclosed on Wednesday when the department toured some of the companies in Mzuzu City.

“We came to Mzuzu last month to check whether the companies are complying with government ban of selling thin plastic paper, but we found that four companies were still selling the banned products,” spokesperson for the department, Sangwani Phiri said.

He said the act committed by the four companies is contrary to Section 33 of the Environment and Management Act of 1996.

Responding to the fine OG plastics Mzuzu branch manager Usman Patel, refused to sign on the fine form before consulting his bosses.

Government, banned the manufacture, distribution, importing and selling of all thin plastic paper in the country effective July 1 2015.n
