The ongoing budget meeting of Parliament will see the highest number of ministerial statements in recent times, with four more expected before the House rises this coming July.

According to Monday’s order paper, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Trasizio Gowelo is expected to deliver a statement on the status of liquor regulations and chiefs’ administration following numerous questions from members of Parliament (MPs).

In the statement, he is expected to comment on a petition on the ban of liquor sachets and queries that government erred to ban chiefs in urban areas.

Gowelo is then expected to deliver a second statement on local roads, grading programme in response to numerous questions on the criteria used to select which roads will undergo grading.

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Atupele Muluzi is also scheduled to make a statement on the general security situation in the country and his ministry’s plans for the future.

However, it is not known when Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe will deliver the much-awaited statement on the developments in the recapitalisation of the State-owned commercial bank, Malawi Savings Bank (MSB).

President Peter Mutharika has suspended the sale of MSB after opposition political parties issued thinly veiled threats that the budget would not be passed if the sale went ahead.
