Four suspects escape from Maula

Four suspects remanded at Maula Prison in Lilongwe escaped Monday night in what prison authorities have described as a calculated operation aided by people outside the prison.

Maula Prison public relations officer Donald Mkolongo confirmed the incident yesterday saying the suspects broke the door to the cell before tearing up a barbed wire surrounding the prison premises.PRISON

“It happened at around midnight when officers on duty were patrolling another side. Meanwhile, we have deployed uniform and civilian officers to places we feel the suspects might be hiding,” he said.

Mkolongo said two of the officers who were on duty have been arrested as investigations are underway.

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jappie Mhango appealed to the public to help the police locate the suspects and said people should not panic because of the matter.

“Malawians should not panic because the police are on the ground and soon the four will be rearrested. However, we appeal to people to help the police do their job,” said Mhango.

According to Maula Prison authorities, three of the escapees, Chonde Saudi of Ngwengwe Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalonga in Salima; Nix Dauda Bonongwe and James Daudi both of Bonongwe Village, T/A Chimwala in Mangochi, were arrested in connection to Area 25 OBM branch robbery while Edward Majawa of Kabudula Village, T/A Kabudula, Lilongwe was arrested for murder.
