Gabadinho in rare Celtic appearance

Struggling star Gabadinho Mhango came in the 78th minute, but could not rescue Blomfontein Celtic from losing 1-0 to Kinnah Phiri’s Free State Stars on Wednesdaynight in the South Africa Premiership.

Mhango replaced Lerato Lamola, but it was Stars who won the Free State derby through Tiyani Mabunda to go 12th and arrest a three-game run. Celtic, who did not feature Flames defender Limbikani Mzava, are 10th on the 16-member table.

The win was a relief for Kinnah who has three games to prove his worth for a head coach permanent offer and has already lost once. He stepped in for his fired boss Tom Saintfiet.

Still in South Africa, Esau Kanyenda was in the thick of things for Polokwane City as they edged out second-from-bottom Platinum Stars 2-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Compatriot Robert Ng’ambi came on for Vincent Khumalo in the 76th minute as the Stars succumbed to Maxwell Molala and Cole Alexander goals, which subdued Eleazar Rodgers’ sole strike.

City moved to ninth place after the win. In Cape Town, there was no place in the starting XI for Flames striker Robin Ngalande as his Ajax Cape Town drew 1-1 with Moroka Swallows also on Wednesday.
