The Veg Delight Restaurant Match Play came to a thrilling end on Sunday at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) after three months of intense competition on the greens.

The pair of Furkan Gani and Sope Kayira emerged overall champions after seeing off a spirited challenge from Sam Mwale and Welkam Phiri, a feat that earned them dinner for two each as well as trophies from the upper-class vegetarian restaurant.

Kayira admitted that their opponents gave them stiff competition.

Carol Banda’s sheer quality continues to stand out as she once again emerged the winner in the singles’ category for ladies whereas revitalised Diana Kambale was her runner-up.

Banda, who also achieved longest drive for ladies on hole two, said: “I always get inspiration when playing alongside Roza Mbilizi because she is a talented golfer.”

In the men’s category, golf captain Hudson Kantwanje carried the day while J.B Kachilika was the runner-up.

In the open category, Mbilizi won in the ladies division with 30 points while Sophie Kalambule came second with 22 points. The men’s division was won by Donbell Mandala who had 40 points while Lester Tandwe was the runner-up after trailing Mandala by just a point.

Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) president Gabriel Kambale had the longest drive on hole 17. Nearest to the pin on hole 12 for men was Mandala while none for the ladies achieved the task.

Director of Veg Delight Tharang Makhecha described the tournament as a huge success.

“It has been a wonderful three months tournament and it was a huge success. This was one way of giving back to the club where I learnt to play golf when I was just 16 years old and over the years, I have learnt a lot of things.

“It is also one way of interacting with potential and existing customers on the services that we offer,” said Makhecha, adding: “The response has been overwhelming and we promise to come back bigger and better next year.”

BSC golf vice-captain Nestor Msowoya thanked the sponsor and the golfers for their commitment.
