Gerald Phiri Jnr, the Flames’ discovery at the 2015 Cosafa Cup, is reportedly attending trials at South Africa Premier League side BidVest Wits FC.

Sources told The Nation that the 22-year-old attacking player received his Zimbabwe employers Caps United’s nod to attend the trials last week. However, Caps have kept the trip a secret.

In a telephone interview yesterday, Caps publicist Joyce Kapota confirmed that Phiri was in South Africa, but added that she needed the Harare club management’s permission before divulging more details.

Phiri joins in South Africa fellow Cosafa Cup squad members such as Blue Eagles’ Micium Mhone and Be Forward Wanderers’ striker Muhamad Sulumba who have passed their trials at Jomo Cosmos.

The towering former Mighty Wanderers midfielder Phiri had unsuccessful trials at SuperSport United also in South Africa and Polish fourth-tier side LZS Potrowka between 2013 and 2014.

Caps United official Joel Makuvire told Zimbabwe media in 2013 that the Polish club had released Phiri after month-long trials because he went there for mere career enrichment for him “to get a feel of the way they train over there, appreciating how football is played in Europe.”

“They were happy with the level of his skill; technically he impressed. But he is still lacking in fitness, but he will have another shot in December. His trial was not really about us looking for a deal,” Makuvire had told the Daily News.
