Gospel artists fundraise for Peter Uyu Mlangeni
Various gospel musicians performed on Monday at Sheaffer ICA Marquee in Lilongwe to raise funds for fellow gospel artist Peter Uyu Mlangeni who was involved in a road accident last year.
The funds will aid his rehabilitation routine which requires him to go to the hospital twice a week for ongoing medical treatment and physiotherapy sessions.
However, the visits are becoming costly with each passing day, causing a financial strain on his life and family.
The event dubbed ‘Gospel Landlords’ invited hundreds of gospel music lovers who came to see their favourite artists in performance.
During the performances, Mlangeni was assisted by fellow musicians to get on stage and he expressed his gratitude for the support.
He said: “I almost lost my life in that September car crash, but God has been good to me. He should be honoured for the life that I still have and I’m humbled for the love all of you have shown to support me. I pray God blesses all of you abundantly.”
While on stage, he sat on a chair and performed one of his latest songs. After the performance, patrons walked to the stage to give him cash.
The artist experiences difficulties with walking and speaking, but lately he has begun to regain his ability to speak.
In an interview, one of the musicians Mlaka Maliro said he was delighted and honoured to perform in aid of Mlangeni who is also his friend.
He urged individuals and the corporate world to provide support to the musician so that he can regain his health.
Commenting after the show, one of the organisers and musicians, Apostle Norman Phiri echoed Maliro’s sentiments.
“Our plea to government and others is to help Mlangeni get further medical aid from outside the country, whether in India or South Africa considering that their hospitals might help him get the medical treatment needed,” he said.
Phiri also commended artists and patrons who showed up for the event.
“The turn-out was beyond our expectations and we thank everyone who took part in this, either through performance or patronising the show,” said Phiri.
The event featured performances by The Great Angels Choir, Kamuzu Barracks Gospel Singers, Mlaka Maliro, James Phiri, Evance Meleka, Shammah Vocalz, Apostle Norman Phiri, Lulu and various gospel artists and choirs.
Mlangeni is renowned for gospel hits such as Wandikweza Yahwe and Ambuye Ndiwabwino.
