Head of delegation to the Commonwealth Games, Flora Mwandira, has said despite the Queens going into camp, government is yet to release funds the Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) requested for the trip.

Mwandira said they allowed the team to start camp on assurance from government that it will finance the undertaking.

The Malawi team comprising netball, cycling, table tennis, boxing, bowling, swimming, judo, weightlifting and field and track athletes is set to leave on June 29 for London where it will spend two weeks before flying to Glasgow, Scotland for the Games.

The Gloucestershire University in London has offered to host the Malawi team and enable it to use its modern sports facilities free of charge, according to MOC administrative secretary Naomi Chinatu.

“The programme is that the team camps for two weeks in the country and another two weeks in London before flying to Glasgow on July 13. The games will start on July 23, but we need to acclimatise first,” said Mwandira.
