Government has asked school development committees in Zomba to be transparent when carrying out Local Development Fund (LDF) projects.

Local Government and Rural Development Minister Grace Maseko made the call on Sunday when she issued a K4.5 million (about $14 000) cheque for the construction of a school block at Gala Primary School and a K4.2 million cheque for a teacher’s house at St Anthony Boys Primary School in Traditional Authority Mlumbe in the district.

She said committees need to be accountable to the community.

“Let me take this opportunity to ask everyone to own the projects because this is development of your area. Collect sand, bricks and engage reputable artisans that can do a recommendable job in the construction process,” Maseko said.

Zomba district commissioner Harry Phiri said the council wants to build 42 school blocks, nine teachers’ houses as well as 28 toilets.

“We have K97.4 million (about $300 000) of which K36 million (about $110 000) is for the construction of teachers’ houses, K56.2 million (about $170 000) for school blocks and K8.2 million for toilets,” he said.
