Govt replaces Auditor General

Government, which has been hesitant to propose the name of the newly appointed Auditor General Peter Kamange for confirmation by Parliament, has finally withdrawn the name and replaced it with Stephenson Kamphasa.

According to Monday’s order paper, government gave a notice for the confirmation of the new Auditor General, whose curriculum vitae was circulated to members of the House last week.

“The Honourable Minister of Finance to move ‘that Mr Stephenson Kamphasa be confirmed by the National Assembly as the Auditor General in accordance with Section 184 (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi’,” reads the order paper.

The order paper showed that the confirmation will be moved on a date to be advised later, but the same Monday, just before the House adjourned its sitting, Leader of the House Henry Phoya announced that the confirmation will take place.

Following under currents in the House over the appointment of Kamange, government was last Wednesday forced to defer his confirmation to this week.

The deferment came amid concerns from the opposition that the then Auditor General designate once served as the interim secretary general of the ruling People’s Party (PP) at its inception.

Phoya did not give reasons for the deferment only, saying there were some issues to be sorted out.

Meanwhile, Kamphasa’s confirmation is expected to be tabled today in the House.
