Group takes anti-drug fight to CSOs in Karonga

Drug Policy and Harm Reduction Platform chairperson Undule Mwakasungula has called on civil society organisations and media to confront the challenges posed by illicit drugs so that the country has a healthy population.

He made the call on Friday in Karonga District on the sidelines of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26 2024.

Mwakasungula said the global observance supported each year by individuals communities and various organisations all over the world aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs present to society.

He said: “The day plays an important role in mobilising support and inspiring action against drug abuse. 

“It brings together governments, international organisations, and individuals to confront the challenges posed by illicit drugs.”

Mwakasungula, therefore, appealed to policymakers to join the growing call for drug policy reform to move away from the outdated and harmful practices of punishing and embrace a public health approach that recognises drug use as a complex issue requiring comprehensive and evidence-based solutions.

On his part, Zomba Mental Hospital health expert Harry Kawiya said drug use is high due to many factors.

He said: “Some engage in drug and alcohol use as a means of dealing with stress which by the end of the day, result in drug and alcohol dependence through addiction.

“However, individuals with dependence do not see any problem thus it becomes hard for them to stop drug and alcohol use.”

The day was commemorated under the theme ‘Expanding Our Ecosystems of Change’.
