Guoji Dream Town firstphase costs K2 billion

The Malawi Housing Corporation—Henan Guoji Development Limited first phase of the project in Lilongwe has cost the company $5 million (about K2 billion), Business News has learnt. Project executive Yankho Somanje said this week that all the 104 houses are now ready for occupation.

The dream town is located in Area 49 in Lilongwe, covering an area of 78 000 square metres, close to Kaunda Avenue.

This is an integrated development estate that will take care of all the needs of its inhabitants with facilities such as clubs, kindergarten schools, security facilities and commercial establishments.

In an interview, Somanje said all the 104 houses that were earmarked for the first phase have been completed.

“We have spent about $5 million (K2.1 billion) to complete the first phase and currently we are in discussion with utility providers such as Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi [Escom] and Lilongwe Water Board [LWB] to connect us to their main lines for electricity and water. The houses are of different categories with two, three and four bedrooms,” he said, adding that they are currently constructing a security fence.

Somanje said they have engaged Lilongwe City Council (LCC) officials who inspected the site to appreciate the quality of workmanship on the houses completed.

LCC director of planning and development Hillary Kamela said they are impressed with the houses, adding that they look durable, well designed and will offer their owners real value for money.

“We indeed visited the sites and what we have seen is impressive. The quality of the houses is world class and the materials used are of high quality. This location will indeed transform the outlook of Lilongwe City,” he said.

About 238 houses are expected to be completed in the second phase and there are expectations that once the whole project is complete accommodation woes in the city will be minimised.
