Habitat assist Nsanje displaced families with temporary shelter kits

Habitat for Humanity Malawi in partnership with International Organization for Migration (IOM) has donated temporary shelter kits to 1000 families at Khope, Mota Engil and Kavala Konje camps in Nsanje district which were hit by Cyclone Freddy earlier this year.

Each affected family will receive tents, craw harmer, blankets, hand saw, sleeping mats, hoes, shovels, and other non-food items that will help them to build shelters.

Speaking on Monday after handing over the materials, Habitat for Humanity Malawi national director, Anock Kapira said the organization’s commitment to ensuring that every Malawian has access to a safe and decent place to call home.

He said: “We are moved that many families were left without a home after being hit by the devastation of the heavy rains.

“We expect will use the emergency shelter kits and non-food items and it will be sad if they will turn them into merchandise for business.”

Kapiri further emphasizes the importance for survivors to relocate to higher ground.

“It’s our desire to see them relocate to higher ground to prevent the recurrence of similar disasters next year, as this will safeguard their lives and protect their property from potential risks,” he said.

Nsanje district commissioner Dominic Mwandira said out of the 70, the council has decommissioned 46 camps, while the remaining are awaiting relocation.

“As a council, we are pleased that the temporary shelter kit will enable them to start a new life where they are going to relocate,” he said

On her part, one of the survivors, Mary Medson said the donated materials will play a vital role in facilitating their resettlement process.
