Help Malawi not to be a dumping site—IG
The Inspector General of Malawi Police Lot Dzonzi says it is important for the public and agencies that look into the importation of goods to be vigilant to prevent Malawi fom becoming a dumping ground.
Dzonzi made these remarks when he opened a two-day training session on Intellectual Property and Pharmaceutical Crime in Lilongwe conducted by Interpol last weekend.
Said Dzonzi,” The training on intellectual property and pharmaceutical crime has come at the right time because the country will benefit by not becoming a dumping place.
“If this is done properly by the Malawi Bureau of Standards [MBS]and the Malawi Revenue Authority [MRA] consumers will be protected because they will not buy products that are hazardous to our health and environment.”
He said the purpose of the training was to acquaint participants with various techniques on how counterfeit products can be identified through modules rendered by the Medical Product Counterfeiting and Pharmaceutical Crime Sub Directorate.
He said a similar training conducted in 2009 ended with an operation in the city, which led to the seizure of counterfeit, unregistered, smuggled, stolen and unauthorised products.
