Hill View win inaugural Inter-schools Golf

Hill View School emerged winner of the inaugural Inter-schools Juniors Golf Challenge played at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) last Friday. They scooped the top spot after amassing a total of 266 gross.

The tournament, which was played on a nine holes foursome stroke play format, had 12 junior golfers from four participating schools. The best four out of six gross scores in each team counted.

Speaking in an interview with The Nation, Hill View captain Mario Phiri praised his team for a wonderful performance, saying: “We are so excited. We beat the other teams by a big margin. This was a great day of golf and I am happy that the organisers have promised us that we shall be competing every term. We look forward to the next tournament.”

On second position was St. Andrews Primary School with 329 gross while Phoenix International School emerged third with a total gross score of 349. Royal Heritage was fourth with a gross score of 398.

The tournament was organised by the National Junior Golf Committee (South), a sub-committee working under the Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM).

BSC vice-golf captain Mike Khomani, who also represented GUoM, said he was impressed with the way the tournament was organised and the support the event received from companies and the parents at short notice.

“Let me thank the sponsors for the overwhelming support we have received. We do not take this for granted. And to the schools, GUoM hereby pledges full support for this cause,” Khomani said.

The tournament was sponsored by Stansfield Motors, National Bank of Malawi, Nico General Insurance, Malawi Telecommunications Limited, Airtel Malawi Limited, Old Mutual, Afrox Malawi Limited, Steers/Debonairs, FAM Trade and the parents.

According to assistant national golf coach responsible for the Southern Region DingaanChirwa, the next competition which is scheduled for end March 2016 is expected to have more schools participating.

“It is the Royal and Ancient’s—the world governing body for golf—dream to have golf played by all and having it as part of the school programme. Our committee in the South has embarked on a “Golf In Schools Project” which will ensure that golf is introduced in schools,” Chirwa explained.
