A new local act, Home Grown African has offered support and joined Michelle Obama’s Online Campaign to bring awareness to the plight of the Nigerian girls kidnapped by a militant Islamist group, Boko Haram, via Twitter.

Home Grown African is a Blantyre based hip hop duo consisting of Classick, real name Yankho Zulu, 21 and Sindizo Msungama, 22, aka Hayze Engola.

This is not the first time the duo is involved in campaigns as they have also been involved in the April Project which was aimed at bringing awareness to child abuse.

On the weekend of their debut single’s release, the duo also supported One Billion and Rising, an organisation against child abuse, to support and raise funds for the rehabilitation and upkeep of Agnes, a 10-year-old rape victim.

According to the duo’s manager Talumba Chirwa, unlike most of their counterparts who jump in head long into fame with a major hit and then fizzle out later, the duo have opted for a more measured introduction into the game.

“Currently focusing on development of loyal fans from the ground up and focusing on establishing a brand, the duo realise the music alone will not be enough to retain people’s interest in the long-term and so they must be about more than just songs,” said Chirwa.

He said the duo recognise they have to meet people’s other needs as well and they have started with a varied approach which includes playing at charity and poetry events to gain respect amongst those that appreciate the art beyond the level of a good beat and a good vibe.

Recently, Timveni Media Group also drummed up support for the release of the Nigerian girls who are being held captive by Boko Haram.

The ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ campaign continue to gain momentum on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook with the aim of forcing the Islamist sect to release the girls.
