House project excites Phalombe Council

Phalombe acting district commissioner Clement Ntambo has expressed satisfaction  with the quality of the houses Habitat for Humanity in Malawi is constructing for 2019 Cyclone Idai survivors in the district.

He said this on Wednesday during an inspection tour of the houses to assess the progress.

Ntambo said: “We are pleased with the quality of the houses.

“Again, the houses are resilient as they are built with cement bricks.”

On his part, Habitat for Humanity in Malawi project officer Chrispin Chavula said they expect to complete and hand over the houses to beneficiaries by the end of this month.

“However, some of the houses have been occupied already,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Agnes Mukoke from Mwaliwa Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Nkhulambe thanked the organisation for the house.

“My house collapsed in 2019 and I did not have resources to construct another one,” she said.

Mukoke said her children will now be able to study at night.

In her remarks, T/A Nkhulambe urged beneficiaries to take care of the houses.

“Following the disaster, many people were homeless. I thank the organisation for relieving the people’s suffering,” she said. 

The organisation is constructing the houses in Phalombe and Zomba districts in partnership with United Nations Development Programme.

In Phalombe, 90 houses  were constructed in the project’s first phase in T/As Jenala and Nkhulambe.

In 2019, Cyclone Idai affected about 22 800 households.
