Hyenas terrorise Kasungu

Police in Kasungu have sought the intervention of the Department of Parks and Wildlife after a number of hyena attacks were reported in Traditional Authority (T/A) Wimbe in the district.

The call comes after a 10-year-old boy was attacked by the marauding hyenas on Sunday evening, barely a week after a 65-year-old man was also attacked by the wild animals.

The boy met his fate at Kabamila Village, close to Estate 87, which is near Muchezi Hill in the district.

Kasungu Police Station deputy spokesperson Harry Namwaza said the victim had gone to play football with friends at a community ground near the hill.

“When they were returning to their respective homes, they met three hyenas which started chasing them. As they were running, the victim slipped and fell down and three hyenas attacked him. Lucky enough, villagers rescued him,” said Namwaza.

The boy was rushed to St Andrew Hospital at Mthunthama, from where he was referred to Kasungu District Hospital.

He suffered deep cuts in the head, chest and buttocks.

Meanwhile, the condition of the boy is said to be stable and is improving.
