I am still PP, says Khumbo

State Vice-President Khumbo Kachali says he has not joined Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) despite endorsing its presidential candidate Peter Mutharika, arguing he is still a member of the governing People’s Party (PP).

But PP has described Kachali’s statement as “laughable”, saying he practically left the party.

Kachali, a former PP vice-president (North), held a joint rally with Mutharika, his running mate Saulos Chilima and several DPP bigwigs at Mzimba Community Centre ground on Monday where he urged Northern Region voters to vote for Mutharika in the presidential race in the May 20 Tripartite Elections.

PP reacted to the development by asking the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to remove (from parliamentary ballot papers) Kachali, who submitted his nomination papers as a PP candidate.

But in an exclusive interview with The Nation on Wednesday, Kachali said he has not left PP although he is supporting a candidate from a different party.

Said Kachali: “I resigned as an executive member of the party [PP] and I am currently an ordinary member. If the PP wants to expel me, it’s up to them.”

He said it was him who organised the Monday meeting and that there was no DPP cloth on the podium. However, several DPP officials, including Chilima and some women, were seen clad in DPP party cloth.

On why he is supporting a DPP candidate if he is still in PP, Kachali argued that it is not strange to do so, citing Enoch Chihana, president of the Alliance for Democracy (Aford), who is supporting President Joyce Banda of PP.

But PP acting secretary general Paul Maulidi accused Kachali of playing games, saying “he is practically out of the party”.

Said Maulidi: “Kachali shows no allegiance to the party, which is clear defiance. He stopped using the party’s colours or slogan; therefore, what he is saying is only playing games.”

Kachali started missing from PP and Banda’s official functions in February this year after the President picked Minister of Industry and Trade Sosten Gwengwe as her running mate.

Kachali described Banda’s decision to pick Gwengwe when he was her Vice-President as a lack of confidence in him.

  1. One thing remains that KK is very corrupt and power hungry. I used to blame MCP for rebuffing him entry into MCP but now I strongly believe they were right. Munthu wanzeru cannot compare his actions to that of Chihana. Aford and PP are in a technical working agreement hence Aford as a party supporting PP. PP and DPP are not in any technical working agreement and Khumbo cannot cheat to say he is still PP when he personally shows allegiance to DPP and not his own sponsoring party. Vuto lopanga zinthu without clear vison and advice ndizimenezi. Technically Khumbo is out of PP and should he win his Parliamentary ticket he may become the earliest member to be automatically declared to have crossed the floor……

SO WHERE HAS HE SAID HE HAS JOINED DPP?
NDI NDALE IZI A MALAWI kkkkkk
Those of us who have attended his numerous political rallies know him as a good political speaker. He knows the implication of whatever he says and carefully crafts words into phrases, sentences then paragraphs; spices the speech with Tumbuka idioms, parables. He is the best politician in the North when it comes to speaking politics on the podium. No doubt about that. “Uyu watumika…zimukhate za majungu”, etc.

BUT WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE, REMEMBER TO VOTE FOR CHAKWERA AND NEW MCP
