I will not cling to power—JB

Malawi President Joyce Banda says if she is to lose the May 20 Tripartite Elections, she will happily hand over the presidency because she has done her best to serve Malawians by reversing the multifaceted woes her government inherited.

Speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during an interface meeting with the clergy, the President said she has overturned Malawi’s political, economical and social woes that had beset the nation two years ago when she assumed office.

She said: “This meeting presents an opportunity to reflect on the past two years of my leadership. I took over the reins of power at a time Malawi was on a brink of collapse economically, due to chronic fuel and forex shortages, the relationship between government and religious leaders was very poor and estimated 2.5 million people were facing hunger.

“These are some of the many challenges I inherited which I have managed to address over the short period of time. I am concerned therefore with reports that I intend to rig the elections. But I must say this, even if I lose the elections, I will happily leave because I know I have turned Malawi’s misfortunes into fortunes.”

Banda said those propagating such unfounded rumours are opposition political parties who want to instil fear in Malawians.

“I have intelligence report that some opposition political parties are planning on destabilising the nation through violence during the polls. Let me say that, Malawians want free, fair and credible elections this year,” explained Banda.

Apart from the elections, some of the issues that were discussed during the meeting held in camera, include the Lake Malawi wrangle with Tanzania and the infamous Cashgate.

“We have had an in-depth understanding and well explained on the progress made so far on the Malawi-Tanzania dispute over Lake Malawi, with some information that has never been shared with the media,” said Apostle Madalitso Mbewe of the Calvary Family Church.
