ICT labs to improve access to information—Macra

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has emphasised the importance of having computer laboratories in schools to enhance access to information for learners.

Speaking on Saturday during a ground-breaking ceremony at Thavite Community Day Secondary School in Salima, Macra quality assurance manager Kossam Chingancheke said the facilities will ease access to information that will help students excel in their education.

“The laboratory is targeting these students as they need technology to get exposed because technology has taken over in all aspects of life worldwide. As a tool in the education sector, the laboratory will enable these students to compete and share knowledge and resources with urban and city counterparts,” he said.

Chingancheke said community members will also access the computer laboratories.

“Communities around the school campus will enjoy the same opportunities in using the laboratory just like the students,” he said.

Salima North legislator Kaphamtengo Yona (Malawi Congress Party) said the laboratory will help solve various problems people in rural areas face due to lack of such facilities.

He said: “We appreciate the initiative because once completed, students will start learning information and communication technology [ICT]-related subjects.

“These days, employers look for computer-literate people.”

Senior Chief Mwanza said the laboratory will motivate students to work hard in class.

“Our area is lagging behind in many ways, but I welcome this development,” he said.

Macra will construct three facilities at Thavite, Mkwero and Lungumadzi schools in the district.
