IF I WERE

President Peter Mutharika’s press secretary, I would admit that it was irresponsible on my part to order government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) and private entities to give business to the Mutharika-owned radio station—Galaxy FM.

If I were bwana Viola, I would realise that being the president’s mouthpiece, the picture I am portraying is that the instruction came from him, more so considering the ownership of the radio station.

Oh yes, if I were Gerald Viola, I would appreciate that the memo I signed demonstrates absolute abuse of powers because I am not supposed to use my position to advance personal interests.

If only I were Viola, I would realise that even my clarification that the letter was authored when I was still director of information, still translates to abuse of power because the question would be: In what capacity was I issuing such an order?

If only I were my man Gerald, I surely would not have exaggerated my importance because that is exactly what I did by writing such an authoritative memo.

That is, of course, if I were Gerald Viola, APM’s spokesperson, unfortunately I am not him! n
