IG conducts patrols in Lilongwe Old Town

Inspector General (IG) of Police Lot Dzonzi recently decided to leave the comfort of his office to conduct foot patrols in Lilongwe Old Town to appreciate, among other things, the problem of street vending in the city.

Dzonzi was in his IG uniform as he walked along the Kamuzu Procession Road, heading towards Mchinji Roundabout.

In an interview at Seven Eleven where he was taking refreshments after the two-hour patrols, Dzonzi jokingly said he decided to take by surprise his officers as well as residents of Lilongwe to show them that the police cares for them

Apparently, officers at the Central Region Police were taken by surprise and joined him when he was about to finish his foot patrols at Seven Eleven shopping complex.

The IG said, once in a while, it is important for him to leave his office and move around to check if officers are conducting foot patrols.

“The term IG is a flowery word to define the position that I occupy, but in other countries an IG is known as Police Chief Constable and I like that terminology; hence, it should not be a surprise for me to conduct patrols as well,” said Dzonzi.

On street vending, the IG said the problem can be addressed if a proper place is identified where a market can be built.

Said Dzonzi: “For a start, we should engage vendors into dialogue led by councillors to see how we can move them out of the streets. The vendors in the streets are making a living and we need to find a lasting solution to solve their problem.”
