IG offers Eagles FDH Bank Cup prize money
Inspector General of Malawi Police Service Merlyne Yolamu yesterday directed that Blue Eagles Football Club players and officials should share the K35 million FDH Bank Cup prize money.
She said this at the officers’ mess at National Police Headquarters in Area 30 when she hosted the team after beating FCB Nyasa Bullets 3-2 on post-match penalties at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Sunday.
During the meeting, Yolamu said she was happy with the team’s victory.
She said: “We are happy as Malawi Police Service that despite the setback the team has been facing after being relegated they got back to win this cup. The eagle has soared higher than the rest.
“The players have demonstrated a never-give-up spirit. As a show of appreciation and to motivate them, they should share the whole prize money among themselves.”
The IG said Malawi Police will support the team for it to continue doing well and win more trophies.
Commenting on a request to promote players and recruit civilian players, the IG said proper procedures must be followed.
“We follow procedures that are laid down. I can’t just stand here and make proclamations. We have heard the requests and we will follow proper procedures,” she said.
Central Region Football Association general secretary Antonio Manda, who attended the event, said Blue Eagles are good ambassadors of the Chipiku Central Region Football League.
“What Blue Eagles have demonstrated by beating Super League giants FCB Nyasa Big Bullets to win the FDH Bank Cup shows that with good resources we can do much better as a league,” he said.
Blue Eagles captain Schumacher Kuwali expressed gratitude to the MPS management for hosting them.
“We are grateful for the directive that the money should be shared by players and backroom staff. This is great motivation. We are very happy to win the cup and looking forward for more success,” he said.
