Bakili: I have a certificate signed by Ferguson

Malawi former president Bakili Muluzi—who is an ardent football fan—has revealed that he has a soft spot for the Barclays English Premiership resurrecting giants Manchester United.

In a lengthy chat on a wide range of issues on football, Muluzi, who was also former Mighty Wanderers secretary general and Bullets sponsor, claimed he supports both Blantyre giants.

“I am Man U and I will always be one. I am old fashioned. I do support them whether they are doing badly or not. I actually have a certificate signed by Sir Alex Ferguson and a T-shirt printed Bakili Muluzi; number one Man U fan,” said the retired leader who got such souvenirs while on a UK trip.

Locally, Muluzi, who has promised to watch the Bullets CAF Champions League home games, could not single out a particular player he loves, but said he respects Flames veterans Esau Kanyenda and Fischer Kondowe.

Muluzi’s admiration for the South Africa’s Polokwane City veteran striker and Bullets winger grew when they delivered the goods after being recalled to the Flames in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Mali and Ethiopia.

Kondowe delivered a man-of-match performance, whereas Kanyenda won hearts after heading in the Flames’ second in 2-0 beating of Mali. With the veterans on the pitch, the Flames managed for the first time in the qualifiers a draw away in Ethiopia.

“I am very encouraged that at such an age the players have come back to the national team. To come back, play and score at that age has inspired me. It is something young players need to learn from. Football is about discipline and commitment,” Muluzi summed up.
