Instil culture of self-reliance—Ziyaye

Churches should not wait upon missionaries abroad to help in shortfalls they face in providing services, including health, Archbishop Tarzicius Ziyaye has said.

Ziyaye, who is Archbishop of Blantyre Archdiocese of the Catholic Church, was speaking at Lunzu, Blantyre on Tuesday when Friends of Mlambe Hospital Association handed over a renovated theatre at the hospital.

“Self-reliance is a very good aspect that we need to have. It is not proper to wait for missionaries from abroad to come to help us. The renovation of the theatre is a good example of the self-reliance [we are talking about],”said Ziyaye.

Friends of Mlambe Hospital Association chairperson Stain Singo said the renovations have cost them at least K500 000 [about $1 666].

“We are looking forward to equip the renovated theatre with modern theatre equipment and to equip one of the rooms at the hospital into an intensive care unit in order to fit with the newly renovated theatre since the hospital does not have one,” said Singo.

This is not the first time the association has come forward to help the hospital.

They previously bought wheelchairs and a suction machine, built two waiting shelters. Last year, they bought a state-of-the-art X-ray for the hospital through donations from Press Trust and National Bank of Malawi.

Mlambe Hospital, built by missionaries, help people from surrounding areas and from as far as Chikhwawa and Chiradzulu.
