International Theatre journey begins

Newly formed International Theatre (IT) Company on Sunday afternoon set up the pace of their journey into stage plays with pomp and glamour at Kamuzu Institute for Sports (KIS) in Lilongwe with a performance of Interrogation.

True to the talent from the university, the Lilongwe-based group displayed an awesome and artistic show that promises a lot for the industry.

Depicted from an idea of an Italian Nobel Prize Winner Dario Fo whose composition Accidental Death of an Anarchistic is rated among the successful compositions in the world; the heart of the play rests on the human rights abuses that happen in police cells, interrogation rooms and in prisons.

In one controversial scene, the play lays out a scenario similar to the mysterious death of Polytechnic student Robert Chasowa. In this scene, police try to cover up the death of a suspect in custody by throwing his body outside through a window.

Said Chauluka: “When telling a story in a poetic way, people have liberty to interpret the story in the way they want. In Interrogation, we are using the same poetic system and in this play, we are just telling issues as they are in the country,” said Chauluka.

Among the big names to watch for are director of IT Chancy Chauluka, Davison Sankhulani, Rhoda Malowa, Masauko Mphonda, Si Mangaluso and Shorai Nyambaro.
