Malawi will remain among the world’s poorest countries unless it commits to invest in the education of women, particularly young girls, Roy Hauya, chairman of the board of trustees of Adolescent Girls Literacy (AGLIT), has challenged.

Hauya made the remarks at Mkumba Teacher Development Centre in the area of Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in Mangochi last Saturday when AGLIT handed over 15 bicycles to its facilitators.

“Investing in women education has enormous benefits. If we have educated women, we are likely to address issues of family size, early pregnancies and child marriages,” he said.

“Besides, if we have educated women we are very much sure that we’ve dealt with gender-based violence (GBV), which affects women a great,” observed Hauya.

He further added that despite women population surpassing that of men in the country, women continue to depend on men for their survival.

“In this regard even the tax base (revenue) of the country cannot grow as there are few people in the business world who may pay tax to the government,” said Hauya.
